Excerpt from the upcoming "I Believe Now"

Max chuckled. “You’re really enjoying this aren’t you?”

Asher laughed as he pulled away. “Yeah…even though I know you’re the one who got me the job.”

Max reached over and grabbed Asher around the neck and pulled him back into his embrace. “I didn’t get you the job. You applied along with thirty other photographers and got the job yourself.”

“See? Right there! That’s how come I know you did it. I never told you any of that.”

Max looked down into Asher’s face with a smile. “Do you think I would allow you to do anything without checking it out first? Of course I know all about it.”

“Oh…yeah, you would do that…right.” He shifted under Max’s arm, not really sure how to take all this over protectiveness. “So…you didn’t threaten any lives or anything? You know, call in some markers?”

Max laughed, something Asher noticed he was doing a lot more of recently. “No, I did not threaten any lives or call in any markers.” He sobered. “Are you disappointed?”

Asher turned to look at Max, a thoughtful look on his face. Disappointed? Really? Did he actually want Max to do those things for him? Well, not threaten people or anything but maybe the occasional marker would be nice; but then again, maybe just a little irritating too. If the mere mention of Max’s name could move mountains, small accomplishments, like these photo books, should mean little to nothing even in his own opinion.

But truthfully he lost himself every time he lifted the camera to his eye. The hours flew by as he chased the light and shadows. The moments he seemed to be able to capture…no, not just moments, but emotion. And not just capture, but create something that would speak to everyone who took the time to look. Sometimes it was just an image, but other times he knew he could make people see what he saw at that moment. He could make people feel the reason he clicked the button in the first place. He felt the magic flow through him and he knew at least some of the shots were exceptional. So at the moment, anyway, it really didn’t matter to him what Max’s name alone could accomplish.

“No. Of course not. I am certainly not disappointed. I love the fact I got the job on my own...if I did.” He saw Max smirk as the man put the thin cigarette to his mouth. “I’m having fun and the shots are turning out great. I might even enter some of the shots in this contest coming up. The winner will have a showing of their work at the next Art Fair Chicago.”

Max nodded his head. “I’ve gone to that a few times.”

Asher once again pulled back after he had settled into Max’s shoulder and looked up at him. “What? You? Cultured? You’re kidding me, right?”

Max smiled but it looked more like he had just been insulted. “Even cold blooded, heartless criminals enjoy art, Asher.”

Well, Asher had to admit the old man did have taste. One look at this living room alone screamed all kinds of things about Max’s personality. Sharp, clean lines, minimalist simplicity with only a touch of color. He leaned his back into the couch suddenly feeling tired again but not taking his eyes off of his lover’s wickedly beautiful face. “I bet if I had any of the pictures I already took of you being the cold blooded…what was that again? Oh yeah, heartless criminal, I would win for sure. Maybe I need to take some more.”

Max raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t worry. I’m not following you.” Asher huffed out.

“I know.”

“But you are following me.”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“I think that would be obvious. To keep you safe.”

“There isn’t anyone out to get me anymore…except you that is.”

Max made no comment as he set his now empty glass down on the table in front of him and snuffed out his cigarette.

“Hey! There is no one out to get me, right?”

“Of course not. But I am still going to protect you.”

“Yeah, well, I noticed a few more guards then usual today. What’s going on?”

“Nothing you need to concern yourself about.”

“So there is something going on. What?” Asher sat up straight and looked right at him, his heart suddenly tripping. “Did something happen?”

Max simply took Asher’s glass from his hand and set it down, too, then took the front of Asher’s robe and pulled him into a firm kiss. Asher fought for a bit, finally being shoved down onto the couch and pinned. Max broke the kiss just so he could whisper in his ear, “It is none of your concern. Stay out of it. I will take care of everything.” Then he took him into a deeper kiss, his hands exploring, making Asher forget they had even been talking.

But Asher did wonder vaguely what would become of dinner.

NEW from Fireborn Publishing "I Believe Now"

Asher Madden and Max Tyler are back!

The long awaited sequel to UNTIL YOU is finally on deck!

June 26, 2015 is the release date!

BLURB:

Yes, Max Tyler and Asher Madden are back! And so is a very angry man from Max's sordid past. A man who believes he has been seriously wronged by the great and powerful Max Tyler.

Wyatt Jackson is angry. Max Tyler made it impossible for the former Congressman to be re-elected and that was all the politician had been after. To top it off, because of all the lies Tyler told,  Jackson almost ended up in prison. Then, to add insult to injury, Tyler left him alive, making it obvious he thought less than nothing of the man's ability to be a problem for him. That just made him more than mad.

Jackson wants an apology. He wants his life back. He wants Max Tyler dead.

Lucky for him, he has a plan to make it all happen.

All of it.

First step? Kidnap Asher Madden.

Max is aware of his error in not tying up that loose end who went by the name of Wyatt Jackson. He just didn't think the man had it in him to bite back. Not after everything that happened over a year ago. But when Asher goes missing and the former Congressman takes the credit for the kidnapping, Max comes up with a few plans of his own.

The only problem is, this time, those well thought out, perfectly planned, sequence of events that were supposed to defeat the bad guy and get Asher back in his protective arms do not play out as perfectly as Max thought they would. And because of that, niether Asher nor Max may make it out alive.

Another excerpt from "Baby, Think it Over"

Excerpt from "Baby, Think it Over"

Eventually, Kedon got the baby calmed again. And again and again. He talked with Rock and Mason for a brief whispered moment, somewhere between a half-finished shower and a bite, literally a bite, to eat.
He found out their baby didn’t cry nearly as much. They were having a great time playing “house.” Of course they really did have an adult present most of the time, so the version of “house” they wanted to play had to be difficult at best, but Kedon knew “parental supervision” had never mattered to them in the past, so why would it now? They didn’t dare ask Kedon how his play family time was going; didn’t dare even joke about their lack of that adult presence. Besides, who needed adult supervision when there was a colicky baby around? All he had time for was trying to please the baby.
But Kedon was learning. He figured out she liked to be rocked fast but bounced slowly. She liked it when you cooed while she was over your shoulder, and she didn’t much like to be burped at all. At least not today. Today, and all day, it was the angle of the bottle while being fed or how tightly the blanket was wrapped, or even the tone of Kedon’s voice. All of it seemed to matter, and he knew it was going to take the entire three weeks to figure it out. He knew by the end of three weeks he would even be doing contortions and back flips if it helped.
Finally around six P.M. Kedon put down the sleeping baby. For a fleeting rare moment, the baby was once again quiet and in her bed. For a short-lived break, Kedon would be able to sit down and enjoy that peace. He thought about going back to bed, back to sleep, but those moments flew by way too fast. Right now he would grab a bowl of cereal and just sit and listen to the blessed silence.
So when Tarell arrived home and the front door slammed, he could have committed murder, and there would not have been a court in the land that would have sent him to prison because of it.
     The baby wailed.
He hadn’t even gotten the first spoonful of cereal to his mouth.
He sighed, put the bowl down, and went to the cradle. After a few minutes of humming and rocking, the baby quieted. Kedon tiptoed back to the couch and his bowl.
Mushy cereal. His mom told him she used to eat mushy cereal. He knew why now. She never had the chance to eat it like you were supposed to. He would have to remember to apologize later.
“So I suppose dinner is…what? In the oven?” Tarell had moved to the couch after kicking off his shoes, and had remained silent until Kedon sat back down.
     “You are a funny man.”

Character Interview with Tarell

Interview with Tarell of "Baby, Think it Over"

  • What do you consider your greatest achievement? To date, getting a little justice where Kedon’s brother is concerned.

  • What is your idea of perfect happiness? Hanging out with Kedon.

  • What is your current state of mind? Mmm. Just came from Kedon’s so…satisfied. (wink)

  • What is your most treasured possession? Well, I can’t say Kedon because he would kill me. (laughs) Actually, I borrowed a notebook from Kedon once and in it he had written his and my name together inside of a heart several times on the back couple of pages. Shocked me at the time and honestly, I don’t think he even remembers it. But now, well, it gives me goose bumps when I look at it.

  • What or who is the greatest love of your life? Kedon. My dad thinks it’s a passing thing even though both my parents really like him. They like his family, too. They even hang out together sometimes.

  • What is your favorite journey? My family went on a safari once. It was really cool because we came across this pride of lions and we saw how the male protected his family. Came right up to the jeep when we got too close. The guide got us back to a safer distance and we watched through binoculars. That male never took his eyes off of us. That really affected me.

  • What is your most marked characteristic? Geez. I guess I’m tall. I was always tallest in my class.

  • When and where were you the happiest? Oh, that first weekend off the project. I mean, I’m really happy anyway these days but that first night off that project…was magic.

  • What is it that you most dislike? Laziness.

  • What is your greatest fear? Fear? I don’t know. Can’t answer that.

  • What is your greatest extravagance? Really? (laughs hard) I won’t answer that.

  • Which living person do you most despise?  (Shakes head slowly then shrugs) Can’t think of anyone.

  • Where would you like to live? Eventually with Kedon. Alone.

  • What do you most value in your friends? Loyalty

  • Whose are your heroes in real life? My dad. He’s pretty amazing. I didn’t really think that growing up. But now, after working with him for a while I see the great man he truly is.

  • On what occasions do you lie? I don’t.

  • Which words or phrases do you most overuse? (laughs) I’ve actually been told I don’t talk enough so that probably doesn’t apply to me.

  • What are your favorite names? Well, I ended up liking the name Ayane.

  • If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? Kedon’s jeans. No, his boxers.

  • What is your motto? Change it up. Don’t expect different results if you do business as usual.

Interview with Kedon from "Baby, Think it Over"

Interview with Kedon of "Baby, Think it Over"

  • What do you consider your greatest achievement?   Oh man, probably not killing Tarell that time he came in the door and woke the baby…again! No, just kidding. I mean, I did want to kill him. But I suppose that can’t be considered an achievement. Not sure, I guess. No, wait! Geez, graduation! I graduated.

  • What is your current state of mind? I’m good. Glad to have finally graduated. I wasn’t worried about that or anything. Just feeling great to have it behind me. High school kind of sucks.

  • What is your favorite occupation? Reading. I love to read. Oh! You mean like what am I going to do when I grow up? Crap! I don’t know. My mom and dad think I can be anything. They keep talking about med school or law school. (laughs) I don’t really know. I still have time to make that decision.

  • What or who is the greatest love of your life? Right now it’s Tarell. I mean, it’s always been him. I can’t imagine being with anyone else.

  • What is your favorite journey?  Haven’t been anywhere yet. Maybe someday I would like to go to the ocean.

  • When and where were you the happiest?  Kind of weird but my happiest time was also kind of a sad time, too. That first night after the project was over. I won’t give any details but…yeah. That night.

  • What is it that you most dislike? Brussel sprouts. I don’t like chick peas either. Hate liver anything.

  • What is your greatest fear? Failure. Disappointing my mom and dad. Spiders. Oh shit! Don’t tell that to Tarell!

  • What is your greatest extravagance?  Well, it wasn’t my extravagance. My parents took me out for my birthday once to Six Flags. Crazy expensive. My mom packed a picnic lunch with this amazing chicken salad she makes. She makes these great sweet potato chips too. Anyway, we ate that for lunch but then dad surprised both mom and me by taking us out to dinner on the way home. It was awesome! He even let me order steak and shrimp.

  • Which living person do you most despise? Whoa. Despise is a strong word. I don’t like Rand or his family. But I feel sorry for him, too. It’s not his fault he’s evil. I dislike his sister more though. I find it hard to feel sorry for her. However, I think Rand could have been a good guy if he had had good parents. His parents suck. But maybe they had sucky parents as well.

  • Which talent would you most like to have?  I would love to be smart. I’m not dumb, or anything, I would just like to be real smart. I could maybe become a doctor or lawyer then.

  • Where would you like to live? In the country somewhere, maybe. I’m sick of big city life.

  • What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? My fear of failure. It’s something I really have to work on.

  • What do you most value in your friends? Kindness. I know. Sappy answer. Don’t tell Tarell.

  • Whose are your heroes in real life? My mom and dad. They’re pretty cool. They can be irritating and embarrassing and all that but…they accept me. All of me. They love me.

  • On what occasions do you lie? Oh crap. Really? That’s an interview question? Geez. I don’t know. I guess if I’m going to get in real trouble I might lie to get out of it.

  • Which words or phrases do you most overuse? (leans over and whispers) I swear a lot. It drives my parents crazy.

  • If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I think I would like to be more confident.

  • What are your favorite names? Ha! Ayane. Did you ask this question to Tarell? Bet he said the same thing!

  • If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? Crap! Die? Yikes. Um, well, me, I guess. I like me and now that I’m with Tarell I don’t want that to end. So, yeah. Me.

  • What is your motto? Keep trying. Never stop trying.
