Once Upon a Wolf by Hurri Cosmo - Excerpt

Coming April 11

The being was downwind, so Ghost couldn’t smell him, but all his senses told him it was only one human. Big, small, fat, strong, he didn’t know or care. If this someone was out after his mate, following his mate, Ghost would deal with him. Simple. Fast. Efficient. Humans could not be any harder to kill than a deer. In mating with his Hawk, he found that the soft, pliable skin under his chin, that warm, fragrant, tasty… well, it was a human’s vulnerable spot, just like any animal. Easily ripped out.
However, he would wait until he knew more. The fact he didn’t understand the human’s relationship with his former pack played a large part in that decision. He glanced at Hawk, admiring his mate’s struggle with his, what he called ‘purchases,’ to get it all back to his tiny cave. At least he had seemed to understand there was a danger behind them. The problem was, they were leading this other human right to where he lived.
That was not going to work for Ghost.
Ghost chuffed at Hawk who stopped to glance back down at the wolf.
“What? Can I rest now?” he panted.
Ghost chuffed again and nodded. Seemed his mate was tired. That was one thing about humans. Their stamina was extremely low. He licked Hawk’s face when the man sat right where he stood.
“Good. I need to. Pulling this heavy contraption up the mountain is wearing me out.”
Ghost whined softly as he turned to go back the way they had come. He would meet up with this other human and determine if it were dangerous or not. If nothing else, he intended on scaring it off, like he did the bear. The problem was going to get it to understand. He had a feeling the human following them was more intelligent than a bear.
“Ghost,” Hawk sputtered as he began to rise. “Where are you going?”
Ghost sighed, turned around and pushed his mate back to the ground.
“You… you want me to stay here? Where are you going?”
Ghost chuffed, licked Hawk’s face again and turned to leave. He glanced back and nodded once at Hawk before continuing back toward the human who followed them.
“Okay. I… I’ll stay. Don’t be gone long.”
His human sounded worried. Ghost didn’t like that. He would have to hurry.
